$10K for Veterans
Oxford, Maine: WBLM 102.9, Oxford Casino and casino guests raised $10,000 to benefit Veterans Inc., Veterans Count (a program of Easter Seals), and Wounded Heroes Program of Maine. WBLM’s team of Herb “Captain” Ivy, Brian “The Guru” James, along with Sarah Richer of Townsquare Media joined forces with Oxford Casino to conduct promotions to regularly raise funds for the very notable Veterans organizations. The Captain had this to say, “WBLM and Townsquare are so proud to be part of this with Oxford Casino. We’re ready, willing and able to make it even bigger next year.” Jack Sours, General Manager and Vice President of Oxford Casino confirmed plans for increased fundraising next year. “Yes, we’re stepping it up next year. I’m very proud of our efforts and the success we’ve had raising funds with WBLM and Townsquare Media for such worthy organizations.”
A Veterans Inc. facility is located in Lewiston, Maine, where the program provides emergency and transitional housing to veterans who are actively working to integrate themselves back into civilian life. Veterans Inc. also provides treatment plans, benefits counseling, transportation, legal advice and referrals, along with long term housing, career counseling, training, job placement and other outreach support to veterans. Alley Smith, ARNG, OEF, Veteran and Regional Manager of Veterans Inc.-Maine said, “We are truly grateful for Oxford Casino’s support of military, veterans and their families. Their donation will be used to assist countless families and veterans across the state. Every penny will assist veterans with basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing and assistance accessing housing and employment opportunities. Veterans Count provides critical and timely financial assistance and services when no other resource is available to veterans, service members and their families, to ensure their dignity, health and overall well-being. Jeremy J. Kendall, LSW and Director of Military and Veterans Services for Easter Seals Maine said, “All of (this donation) will stay here in Maine with 90% going directly back to the veterans we serve. This money will help put food on a veteran’s table to feed their family, fix a vehicle so the veteran can attend important medical appointments or maintain stable employment, pay a rent or mortgage payment for a veteran that has fallen on hard times or repair a home to increase the veteran’s housing stability. In 2008, when Pam Payeur’s son returned from war as a wounded veteran, she developed Wounded Heroes Program to help hundreds of wounded veterans with financial support and guidance to help them navigate the government system to help them acquire the benefits they rightfully deserve. Wounded Heroes is a 100% volunteer-run organization, with 95% of donations used to help pay rent/mortgage, phone bills, heating fuel payments, and more while they are waiting for their disability claims to be processed.
